Kerala BJP leader P C George booked for 'hate speech'

NEW DELHI: Kerala BJP leader P C George has been booked with allegedly making remarks that could incite religious hatred, police stated on Saturday. George is accused of delivering hate speech against a minority community during a television discussion earlier this week, according to sources.
The Erattupetta Police registered a case against the senior leader on Friday based on a complaint lodged by the Muslim Youth League Municipal Committee.
He has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the police added, noting that further proceedings will be initiated shortly.
“The case was registered after the complainants’ statements were recorded,” a police officer explained. Meanwhile, the BJP strongly criticised the case against George, describing it as “political vendetta by the LDF government.”
Senior BJP leader and Kerala in-charge, Prakash Javadekar, accused the CPI(M)-led Left government of remaining silent on Hamas and allowing PDF followers into their ranks.
Defending George, Javadekar said the leader had already clarified that his remarks were intended to oppose extremism rather than target any particular community.
“The FIR against PC George is political vendetta by the LDF government, which does not utter a word against Hamas while admitting PDF followers into their fold,” he posted on his ‘X’ handle.
“UDF is equally guilty of appeasing extremist politics. It has never supported the ban on PDF or condemned Hamas. PC George has already clarified that his intention was to oppose extremism, not target a community. Kerala stands united against extremism,” he added.
BJP state president K Surendran also criticised the Pinarayi Vijayan government for filing the case against George, asserting that the party would challenge it both legally and politically.
Surendran further alleged that the case was registered under pressure from communal forces.
