KDMC cracks down on illegal water connections in Kalyan's buffalo stables

KALYAN: The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) cut a large number of illegal pipelines being used for unauthorised water supply in the famous buffalo stables in Thane district’s Bail Bazaar area of Kalyan.
The KDMC’s water supply department, with their team from at least six ward offices led by City Engineer Anita Paradeshi, on Thursday not only found these 65 illegal pipeline connections, which were covered with soil, but also removed the holes by welding the main line after cutting the illegal water lines.

Water lines

Following this action, the water supply department has decided that it will patrol this route every day so that no stable owner can steal water illegally in this way in the future.
It may be recalled that there are more than 5,000 buffaloes in different stables in Kalyan’s Bail Bazaar, from where lakhs of litres of milk are supplied every day in Thane district as well as Mumbai.
According to KDMC sources, since these stables require a lot of 24-hour water, the stable owners take illegal connections from the main line to save on water bills, which amount to lakhs of rupees.
KDMC sources said KDMC cut the illegal water connections of these stable owners many times before and even filed FIRs against them.
Despite this, many stable owners steal water by adopting different tricks to save money.
Ashok Ghode, Executive Engineer of the Water Supply Department of KDMC, said that since the main line of Kalyan East passes through this route, which has 24-hour water, the people running the stables make holes in this main pipeline and to avoid that the pipe is not visible they puts soil, grass, or stable waste there.
If sources are to be believed, many times due to these illegal water connections, common people suffer because they get water with less force.
