Jail authorities oppose moving dismissed RPF cop to Taloja

Mumbai: Opposing the plea to move dismissed RPF constable Chetan Singh to Taloja Jail from Akola Central Jail, jail authorities submitted that the facility in Navi Mumbai was overcrowded and housed 2,800 undertrials as opposed to its capacity of 1,900.
Taloja Jail superintendent also cited danger from accused involved in serious crimes and the structural audit of the jail as other grounds to oppose the plea. The authorities also submitted that dangerous accused from different gangs are also kept there, and they frequently fight with jail employees for not producing them before the concerned court.
Singh was arrested for gunning down his senior and three passengers in Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express on July 31, 2023. While Chetan is housed in Akola Jail, over 500km from the sessions court, in his plea he said Taloja Central Prison is safer as it is 49 km from trial court. He is currently produced via video conferencing. tnn
