As per the report of local health officials, a California child is suspected to have bird flu after drinking raw milk. Health officials in California’s Marin County reported that the child experienced fever and vomiting after drinking the unpasteurized milk and warned others against consuming any raw milk products. Health officials in Marin County released a statement, saying, “Marin County Public Health is reporting a suspected case of bird flu in a child who experienced fever and vomiting after drinking raw milk. They added, “The child has recovered, and no other family members became sick, indicating no person-to person transmission.”
The statement continued, “MCPH (Marin County Public Health) is actively investigating this possible case of bird flu linked to raw milk consumption with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the federal Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).” They further noted that “raw milk, which hasn’t been pasteurized, poses a risk of spreading diseases, including influenza.”
For now, the child is only suspected of having bird flu, pending tests to confirm the diagnosis. However, officials are concerned about the risks of drinking raw milk because it doesn’t undergo pasteurization – a process that has been shown to kill bacteria and viruses, including bird flu. This suspected case comes less than a month after another California child was confirmed to be the first U.S. child infected with bird flu — though the cause of infection remains unknown. The child, whose age was not disclosed, had mild respiratory symptoms. More than 50 human cases of a bird flu variant have been confirmed across seven states this year, 32 of which were reported in California.

California health officials last week announced that it had “secured a broad, voluntary recall” of raw milk and cream products from supplier Raw Farm, LLC after it tested positive for the virus “at both retail and dairy storage and bottling sites.”
Can drinking infected raw milk cause bird flu?
It’s not yet clear whether people can become infected with bird flu from drinking raw milk, but studies in cats and mice suggest the animals can get sick from drinking contaminated raw milk.
However, UCSF infectious disease expert Dr Peter Chin-Hong pointed out that raw milk has long been linked to E.coli, salmonella, listeria risks and now bird flu.
The CDC continues to warn against drinking raw milk, which can contain bacteria and viruses that can lead to gastrointestinal distress. In rare cases, it can lead to more severe illness such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can cause paralysis.

Side effects of drinking raw/unpasteurised milk:
Drinking raw milk can cause a variety of side effects, including:
Gastrointestinal illness: Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Diarrhea can sometimes be bloody.
Severe or life-threatening diseases include:
Guillain-Barré syndrome, which can cause paralysis.
Hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can result in kidney failure, stroke, and even death.
Listeriosis, which can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.
Other illnesses: These include meningitis, chronic disorders, and sometimes highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird or avian flu.
Raw milk is especially dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, children, older adults, and pregnant women. Illness can last for up to a week or more.
Pasteurization is the process that removes disease-causing germs from milk. Pasteurized milk offers the same nutritional benefits without the risks of raw milk consumption.
