On Monday, the BMC started the much-delayed pilot project to provide the anti-tuberculosis (TB) BCG vaccine to the high-risk adult population from 12 wards of the city. In the rest of the state, over 10 lakh people already received the preventive vaccine in the last few months. BCG is usually given to 15-day-old infants, but the central health ministry and the Indian Council of Medical Research are, through the pilot project, checking if it could enhance protection against TB among adults as well. On Monday, the first day of the BCG drive for vulnerable populations such as senior citizens, previous TB patients, smokers, and patients with diabetes, among others, the BMC’s health teams managed to vaccinate 1,990 people. The plan is to vaccinate 30,000 to 40,000 people and follow their progress for three years to ascertain if BCG has helped them. tnn
