“I just want..”: Los Angeles Dodgers' Miguel Rojas reveals what he wants in return from Roki Sasaki for No. 11 jersey gift

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed a contract with Roki Sasaki to the Minor League. The new introduction brought excitement and a noteworthy change in the jersey number for the veteran player, Miguel Rojas. Rojas, who for the past 3 seasons wore the No. 11 jersey, will now switch to No. 72. He debuted with this number in 2014 and now, accepting change, is shifting back to it.

Miguel Rojas’s Perspective on Jersey Swap with Roki Sasaki

Rojas, at the DodgerFest, addressed inquiries about what he desired for his gesture. To it, he stated, “A lot of people have been asking me what I want in return. I’m not looking for anything, to be honest with you.”
It’s been emphasized by Rojas that these changes typically occur in opposite directions, as young players relinquish the numbers to the seasoned veterans. However, with a focus on winning, Rojas is eager to have Sasaki on the team.
Rojas further stated he just wants to win. He said, “I just want Roki Sasaki on my team, and that’s what I’m looking toward. I’m excited to see what this guy can bring to our team. I’m more than happy just to see him feel comfortable and feel good.”
He added, “That’s what I’ve said all this time. When guys come from a different culture, from a different country, I want them to feel comfortable in the clubhouse. If a number makes him feel comfortable, that’s what I’m going to do. I’ve been saying it, and now I have to follow through.”

Miguel Rojas Nod to a Great Past

The decision made by Rojas to revert to No. 72 is a simple nod to the rookie year he had with the Dodgers, where he made a memorable defensive play. The game helped preserve the only no-hitter of Clayton Kershaw.
Rojas has also previously worn Jersey No. 19 with the Miami Marlins. However, the number was retired, honoring Jim Gilliam. It prevented Rojas from using it when he returned to the Dodgers.

Roki Sasaki Expressed Gratitude to Miguel Rojas

Responding to Rojas’s gesture, Sasaki expressed his intention to offer him a gift. It is said to be a token of appreciation. It aligns with the Japanese gift-giving cultural practices. While Rojas remains open to the gift’s acceptance, he reiterated that his major interest lies in building a stronger relationship with Sasaki.
“I will take anything that Roki wants to give me. I’m not going to say no to something, but I’m not asking for anything,” Rojas commented.
Rojas is looking forward to Sasaki’s contributions. He further aims to ensure a supportive environment for Sasaki both off and on the field.
