How did this 'Luteri Dulhan' trick wealthy men on matrimonial apps?

A woman from Dehradun, Seema Agarwal, has been arrested in Jaipur for allegedly cheating a jeweller she recently married and stealing his valuables. The jeweller, who lives in Jhotwara, reported that Seema disappeared with a large amount of cash and expensive items just a few months after their wedding.
The theft and disappearance
According to the reports presented by various online media sources, in July 2023, a jeweller filed a complaint saying his wife, Seema, had gone missing, taking jewellery worth Rs. 30 lakhs, Rs. 6.5 lakhs in cash, and other valuables. The couple had met on a matrimonial app and tied the knot in February 2023. But just a few months later, Seema disappeared, leaving behind no trace and taking the family’s wealth with her.
A history of deceptive marriages

As per online media sources, as the investigation progressed, police uncovered that Seema had a history of similar scams spanning several years. She often targeted wealthy men, particularly those who were widowed or divorced. Using matrimonial apps, she would connect with these men, earn their trust, marry them, and then steal from them.
In 2013, Seema married a businessman’s son in Agra. Shortly after their wedding, she accused him of domestic violence and managed to extort Rs. 75 lakh. In another incident in 2017, she targeted a software engineer in Gurugram. She filed false charges of rape and assault against his cousin, using these accusations to extort Rs. 10 lakh, as reported by media sources.
Manipulating the victims with legal threats
As per reports, Seema’s most recent crime took a disturbing turn. After marrying the jeweller in Jaipur, Seema allegedly tried to extort even more money from him using legal threats. She filed false charges of assault against him and even accused his family members of rape in her hometown, Dehradun. The police believe she used these false accusations to scare the jeweller into paying her more money to avoid getting into legal trouble.

As per media reports, the Jaipur police formed a special team to track down Seema, eventually finding her at her home in Dehradun, where she was arrested and brought back for questioning. During the interrogation, Seema admitted to running similar scams over the years. The police believe she deliberately targeted wealthy men who were emotionally vulnerable, using matrimonial apps to learn about their finances before carrying out her plans.
And so, this case is a reminder to be careful when using online matrimonial platforms. While these apps are meant to help people find life partners, they can also be misused by scammers like Seema to exploit others. Authorities advise users to stay cautious and think twice before sharing personal or financial details online.

The police are also asking anyone who might have been a victim of Seema’s scams to come forward. They are working to uncover the full extent of her fraudulent activities, and Seema remains in custody as the investigation continues.
