MUMBAI: Preparations are afoot for New Year 2025 celebrations on Tuesday night at public and private spaces citywide. House parties are a popular choice given the thick layer of smog in the open air this season.
The city seafront does see a fair turnout of revellers though. Senior PI Swati Petkar of Colaba police station is overseeing arrangements at Gateway of India.
“We are alerting people that there will be no fireworks or public performance at Gateway. People come here mistakenly expecting a grand function. As for bandobast, we have made separate enclosures for stags and families. Watchtowers and full lighting is arranged. We will keep a special lookout for eve teasers and mobile thieves.”
Over in Juhu, where the beach is the suburban open air party venue, senior PI Mahadev Kumbhar said, “We are taking strict action against drunk driving, rash driving and eve teasing. A special drive is under way against illegal hawkers. In fact 20-25 hawkers were charged just today. All troublemakers will be booked.” Kumbhar said a floating crowd of 5,000-10,000 people visits Juhu Beach through this night.
On Jan 1 at Siddhivinayak temple, Prabhadevi, special aartis will be performed intermittently through the day from 1.30am till 8pm. Darshan is from 3.15am till 10.30pm.
Churches will conduct New Year masses on Dec 31 and Jan 1. Holy Family, Chakala, is having a robust season with its feast and the Triduum. Assistant priest Fr Joaquim Tellis said, “There was zero waste. We neither used paper plates nor glasses nor plastic bottles. We had a ‘Bal Melawa’ for 150 street children and gave 200 bars of cake to policemen.” On Dec 31, Fr Joaquim will conduct adoration service at 10pm followed by mass at 10.30pm on the school grounds.
About 130 families affiliated to Christ The King Church in Govandi’s Shivaji Nagar will join adoration at 10.30pm followed by midnight mass at 11.15pm, said Fr S Gnana Jothi. New Year morning mass is at 9am Jan 1.
Over in Umrale, Nalasopara, Fr Simon Britto will spend a quiet New Year with two senior priests who are both 89 years old and in his care. St Pius seminary in Goregaon has been observing its Pius Sangram beside its beautiful crib and star, said Fr Gilbert de Lima.
