Mumbai: A 15-year-old girl and her 19-year-old male friend ended their lives by jumping in front of a running train at Vikhroli station on Sunday. The railway police (GRP) said the incident was captured on the railway CCTVs. A suicide note purportedly written by the man mentions that the girl’s family was opposed to their relationship.
The two lived in the same neighbourhood at Bhandup. The girl was a class IX student, while the man had dropped out of school and worked with a courier service. The two had been seeing each other for the past three months. The girl’s family members had expressed their disapproval as the couple belonged to different castes.
Recently, the girl’s family decided to send her away to their home town. On Sunday morning, the man visited her house to speak to her father and dissuade him from sending the girl away. But the family would not budge. Later that morning, the girl vanished. Her family lodged a complaint of abduction at Bhandup police station against the man.
While officials of the crime branch and Bhandup police station were looking for the man, the couple headed to Vikhroli station. Cameras at the station have captured them seated on a bench on platform 4. At 1.53 pm, as Garib Rath Express was arriving, the two got up and leaped in front of the train. The injured couple were taken to Rajawadi Hospital where doctors pronounced them dead.
A suicide note written in Hindi was found on the man. The note addressed to his parents sought forgiveness and said that the two were in a relationship, but had decided to end their lives over opposition from the girl’s family. Police also recovered the his cellphone. The bodies were handed over to their families. (Names have been withheld)
