MUMBAI: For nearly a week now, close to 2,000 residents of a few buildings in Kalpataru Aura in Ghatkopar have been battling a serious issue – contaminated water flowing through their taps.
The supply of tainted water led to several residents falling ill, with some requiring hospitalisation. Schoolchildren were also affected, missing their ongoing exams due to illness in some cases.

In response to complaints, BMC collected water samples from the connection feeding the building’s suction tank. According to results from the municipal laboratory, the water was deemed fit for consumption, ruling out contamination in the municipal water supply.
However, the residents have said that if the contaminated water problem persists, the BMC should guide them rather than saying that the municipal supply is fit for consumption.
Harsh Asher, secretary of the building 2A, B, said the civic authorities need to provide guidance to them as along with residents, the housekeeping staff, too, have taken ill. “On Friday, the BMC sent a team of municipal doctors to examine residents who reported falling sick due to the water issue. However, the lack of concrete action in solving the contaminated water issue is making us feel helpless,” said Asher, adding that their building’s water tank was cleaned last month.
Vinod Gada, chairman of buildings 1 A, B, C, D, said that they have even approached elected representatives for a solution. “We need this to be solved on priority as more and more residents are getting affected because of it,” said Gada.
Former Ghatkopar corporator Pravin Chheda said he advised the residents to run a camera surveillance through the water and sewerage pipes.
Sachin Tarkar, assistant engineer of N Ward water works department, said that there is no problem in the municipal water supply. “We have already inspected and informed residents that the municipal water supply is not contaminated. If that was the case, all buildings around would have been affected, which isn’t the case,” he said.
