Man dies from Guillain-Barre syndrome, death toll rises to 7: How to stay safe
The Maharashtra Health Department has confirmed the seventh death linked to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), raising concerns about this rare but serious neurological condition. The latest victim, a 37-year-old man from Pune, succumbed to the syndrome at the hospital after battling complications like septic shock and acute coronary syndrome, according to reports.
With 192 suspected cases and 167 confirmed, health authorities are intensifying efforts to monitor the outbreak. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent GBS, certain precautions can help reduce the risk. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself.

Tally of Guillain-Barre syndrome rises to 192

Maintain proper hygiene and sanitation

One of the leading triggers of GBS is infections, particularly gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. You can minimize exposure by:

  1. Washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom.
  2. Avoiding contact with individuals who have contagious infections.
  3. Using disinfectants and maintaining a clean environment.
  4. Ensuring safe drinking water, as contamination has been linked to the current GBS outbreak.

Follow food safety measures

Many cases of GBS are linked to Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria commonly found in undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk, and contaminated water.
This is how you can reduce your risk:

  1. Cooking meat, especially poultry, to safe temperatures.
  2. Avoiding raw or undercooked seafood and eggs.
  3. Preventing cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards for raw meat and vegetables.
  4. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.

You need to strengthen your immune system

A strong immune system can help the body fight off infections that may trigger GBS. Consider these lifestyle changes:

  1. Eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  2. Exercising regularly can help boost circulation and immune response.
  3. Getting proper sleep (7-9 hours per night) to help the body recover and fight infections.
  4. Managing stress through meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises.
  5. Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as these can weaken the immune system.

When to seek medical attention for infections?

Early treatment of infections can prevent complications that might lead to GBS. You need to keep these things in mind:

  1. Consult a doctor if you have a persistent fever, diarrhoea, or respiratory problems.
  2. When diagnosed with a bacterial infection, take the antibiotics as prescribed.
  3. Avoiding self-medication, which could hide symptoms and postpone appropriate treatment.
  4. Getting vaccinated against flu and other infections, as viral illnesses have been related to GBS in some instances.
