Mumbai: A 33-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh was arrested by Customs for allegedly smuggling 1.3 kg of gold worth Rs 1.07 crore at Mumbai airport. Acting on specific intelligence, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) intercepted a passenger identified as Mohammed Shadat Khan, who arrived from Jeddah.
When asked whether he was carrying any dutiable goods or contraband, he said no. However, as the officers had a specific tip-off, they cornered him and conducted a thorough check of his luggage, resulting in the recovery of 24 KT rhodium gold wires.
During interrogation, he admitted that he was carrying gold for someone else for monetary considerations. He was booked under the Customs Act, and the officials seized the gold under the provisions of the Customs Act.
