Elon Musk’s xAI launches web version of Grok chatbot and its Free

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has quietly launched a web version of its Grok AI chatbot. This new version will make it accessible to everyone without needing an account on the social media platform X (earlier Twitter). The beta version of the web app, which is currently available at Grok.com, offers similar features to the chatbot’s recently launched iOS app.

This includes real-time information gathering, question answering, and image generation. Users can also control Grok’s responses with different modes like Auto, Visualize and Search. This expanded availability will make Grok a more direct competitor to other popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Grok chatbot’s web version: How it works

Similar to the iOS app, users can access the Grok.com website without requiring an X account. By clicking the “Sign In” button, they can choose to link their X account or log in using Google or email.

Those signing in without an X Premium account will also face similar limitations to the free plan, including 10 image generations every 2 hours, 3 image analysis credits per day, and 4 image generations per day.
Upon signing in, a ghost icon in the top-right corner will allow users to enable “Temporary Mode.” When activated, a message below the input box states, “This chat is temporary and won’t appear in your history or be used to train models. We may securely retain it for up to 30 days for safety purposes.”
Next to the ghost icon, users will find a link to their chat history and a basic settings menu. At the bottom of the settings menu, they can select their appearance preference, choosing between Light, Dark, or System themes.
With a free model and a dedicated website, Grok has expanded beyond its initial offering for X Premium subscribers, making its AI tools accessible to a wider audience.
This move will cater to those who prefer a focused website experience and provide access in environments where social media may be restricted, such as corporate or educational networks.
