Eggs hurled at Ram Navami procession in Palghar; security upped

PALGHAR: Unidentified persons allegedly threw eggs at participants of a motorcycle rally organised for Ram Navami at a locality in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, leading to brief tension in the area, police said on Monday.
Following the incident on Sunday, local constabulary swiftly arrived at the scene and stabilised the situation, subsequently registering a case against unidentified persons for mischief and hurting religious sentiments.
One individual has been detained for interrogation, the police said.
The procession, organised by Sakal Hindu Samaj commemorating Ram Navami, commenced from Sarveshwar Temple in Chikhaldongri and was proceeding towards Pimpleshwar Temple at Global City in Virar (West) when the incident transpired.
Around 100 to 150 motorcycles, a ceremonial chariot, and two tempos comprised the procession, which garnered substantial participation from local residents.
Upon reaching their destination near Pimpleshwar Temple, several motorcycle riders, who had traversed through a side street, were abruptly targeted by eggs purportedly thrown from an adjacent building, a police official said.
This provoked indignation amongst devotees and created a tense atmosphere in the vicinity.
Upon notification, personnel from the Bolinj police station arrived at the location and restored order, the official said.
The Bolinj police have lodged a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for public mischief and hurting religious sentiments and heightened surveillance in the area.
Authorities have urged the public to maintain composure and refrain from disseminating unverified information on social media that could exacerbate tensions, the police said.
