Vasai: The Crime Branch Unit 3 of Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) arrested a 33-year-old driver on Wednesday for posing as Income Tax officer and duping over 40 people by promising them senior postings in several government departments like the CBI, Income Tax, IRS and the Home Department.
The driver, Rinku Sharma (33), was arrested from his home in Taloja in Navi Mumbai. During search, police seized 28 ID cards of various government agencies, including ID cards and appointment letters he issued to the victims. A case has been registered under BNS sections of 318(4), 204, 319(2), 338, 336(3),340(2),3(5). The driver was sent to five days police remand after he was produced in Vasai court on Wednesday.
One of the complainants approached the Pelhar police station on Dec 12, 2024, stating that accused Sharma (33) had posed as an Income Tax commissioner and used to drive a car with a logo of the Income Tax department along with a ‘lal batti’. Rinku had assured a job of an income tax inspector for the complainant’s daughter and took 15 lakh from them over 2021 to Dec 2024. When there was no sign of the accused, job or the money, they filed a complaint with the Pelhar police station.
“The accused has only studied till class 6 and came to Mumbai at a very young age. He started working as a driver at the Income Tax building in BKC,” said PI Pramod Badakh (Crime Branch) Unit-3. “Here, he understood the hierarchy of the officers and gained knowledge of various departments,” added Badakh.
“We are calling all the victims and taking their statements. Till now, we have traced 40 victims and the amount runs into around Rs 2 crore,” said DCP (crime branch) Avinash Ambure. He also said the number of victims and the amount is likely to increase and that most of the victims are from Vasai-Virar and a few are from Mumbai. Rinku avoided online transactions and took only cash. Sources said the accused has two wives, one in Nalasopara and another in Mumbai.
