Mumbai: A 32-year-old man from at Malad (east) has been arrested for the murder of his wife Sunday night following a history of disputes over the past few years. The accused, Nitin Jambhle, and his wife, Komal Shelar (25), were headed for separation, the police said.
According to the police, the couple had had a court marriage in 2018. But their families had expressed displeasure over this, and wanted the couple to get married in a traditional ceremony later.
The couple lived with their respective families, and used to meet often.
Over a period of time, the two started to doubt each other’s fidelity, according to the police. After the man confided in his family members about his suspicion, they objected to the two of them getting together.
Last year, the woman lodged a complaint against the husband at Dindoshi police station. In the complaint, she had stated that the husband had stolen her gold chain and had circulated some private photos that they had clicked during their good times together. A criminal offence was lodged against the husband. The police said that the relationship between the couple had soured.
A few days ago, the woman allegedly called up the husband, as she wanted to borrow a sum of Rs 10,000 from him. He called her to a friend’s vacant house at a chawl at Kasam Baug in Malad (east).
On Sunday, between 7.30 pm and 9.45 pm, while the couple was at the friend’s house, a fight broke out between them. The man allegedly stabbed the woman to death using a kitchen knife. He later surrendered at Dindoshi police station. A team of police officers rushed to the chawl in Kasam Baug where the crime had taken place. The bleeding woman was rushed to a hospital where doctors pronounced her dead. Senior police officers, including deputy commissioner Smita Patil and assistant commissioner Datta Dhole, visited the crime scene.
A case of murder was registered against the man based on a statement by the woman’s mother, Suman. The deceased woman worked for a private company while the husband was employed with a financial institution.
