Can eating tomatoes, watermelons cure depression?

A new study published in the Food Science and Nutrition journal has found that lycopene, commonly found in tomatoes and watermelons can actually ease depression symptoms.
“Compared to commonly used clinical antidepressants, lycopene offers higher safety,” the researchers have said. Lycopene is a natural plant extract widely studied for its powerful antioxidant and neuroprotective effects.
For the study, researchers treated induced depressive-like behaviors in mice. They found that the treatment significantly improved these synaptic deficits and reversed the depressive-like behaviors induced by chronic social defeat stress.
“This study explored the mechanisms underlying depressive-like behaviors induced by CSDS in mice and provided preclinical evidence that lycopene may serve as a potential antidepressant. It offers an effective avenue for the development of novel antidepressant therapies,” the researchers have said.
In 2020, another study examined the effect of lycopene supplementation on mood and quality of life in infertile men. “Lycopene is considered to be one of the most important antioxidants that can contribute to reducing or preventing the psychological damage that leads to infertility,” the researchers had said, however they had concluded that no significant differences were observed in terms of depression, anxiety and stress scores, or quality of life, after lycopene supplementation.

Where is lycopene available and how to maximize its absorption?

Lycopene is a naturally occurring carotenoid and a powerful antioxidant that gives red and pink fruits their vibrant color.
The highest concentration of lycopene is found in tomatoes. Other excellent sources include watermelon, pink grapefruit, guava, and papaya. Watermelon, in particular, is one of the richest non-tomato sources of lycopene. Red bell peppers also contain some lycopene, though in smaller amounts.
Lycopene is fat-soluble, meaning it is best absorbed when consumed with healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, or nuts. Heating also improves its bioavailability, making cooked tomato dishes, soups, and sauces excellent ways to maximize lycopene intake.
