Mumbai: Railways has achieved 15% progress in the redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), which promises an airport-like experience for passengers while also creating space for commercial and residential units in south Mumbai.
A senior official stated that as part of the “CSMT 2.0” initiative, 95% of the excavation work for the new Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) building was completed, while piling work for the Officers’ Residential Complex is fully finished. The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) is actively monitoring the project to ensure its timely completion.
The redevelopment is being executed by Ahluwalia Contracts Limited, with the plan approved by Central Railway on Dec 19, 2022. The project, with a total cost of Rs 2,450 crore, so far incurred an expenditure of Rs 341 crore. The redevelopment covers an expansive area of 4,61,534 square meters.
Currently, a new four-storey DRM office building is under construction near platform 18 at CSMT. Once completed, the existing DRM building will be demolished. Excavation work for the new structure is nearly complete, and 65% of foundation work, involving reinforced concrete footings and an RCC raft foundation, is finished.
Project includes buildings dedicated to passenger facilities, parcel services, decks connecting mail/express and local trains, and skywalks.
