Consider bringing religious places of all faiths under govt control: Speaker

Nagpur: Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Tuesday told the state govt to consider bringing religious places from other faiths under govt control. BJP minister Jaykumar Rawal said govt will consider the regulation of religious places from all faiths and not just a particular faith’s pilgrimage centres.
Narwekar made the suggestion while discussing amendments and regulations related to the Siddhivinayak temple trust. “The preamble of the Constitution talks about the secular nature of the country. When we travel around in our constituencies and talk to people, they ask us about govt control over religious places of only certain religions. They ask why religious places from other faiths have no govt control over them. I think all religions should be treated equally and places of worship of all religions should be brought under govt control,” Narwekar said.
Responding to the suggestion, Rawal said, “Govt will look into it and take a decision.”
Narwekar made the suggestion during a debate on the bill related to the Siddhivinayak Temple Trust. Govt placed a bill to increase the number of members on the Shri Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple Trust (SSGT) to 15 and to extend the tenure of trustees to five years instead of three years.
