Cold wave likely in parts of north India from today

NEW DELHI: Parts of north India are likely to see cold waves and fog from Monday, with IMD expecting a fall of three-four degrees in night temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan in the next three days.
“Cold wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Punjab and Haryana during Dec 31-Jan 2, and over Rajasthan during Dec 30-Jan 2,” IMD said. It also issued dense fog and cold wave warnings for the year-end and New Year Day.

Though there will mostly be clear skies during the day, the maximum (day) temperatures in the region are expected to be in the range of 12-16°C. In the plains, a cold wave is considered when the minimum (night) temperature of a station is 10 °C or less and it is at least 4.5°below normal.
Fall in minimum temperatures by 4 to 6 °C is also predicted for Uttar Pradesh during the next five days. Later, a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from Jan 6, causing rainfall or snowfall over the western Himalayan region.
