Mumbai: After remaining below 30 degrees for two consecutive days, maximum temperatures in the city on Sunday hovered around 30 degrees Celsius. While IMD’s Colaba observatory recorded maximum temperature of 30.4 degrees Celsius, the Santacruz observatory recorded 30.2.
Minimum temperatures have risen from 14°C a week ago to 20°C. Experts attribute this to partly cloudy skies and high humidity levels. On Sunday, the Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum of 20°C, while the Colaba observatory noted 21.5°C.
The weather bureau, in its forecast for Dec 23, stated that maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 29 degrees and 22 degrees respectively.
“Currently, we are experiencing early westerly winds alongside strong northerly winds, which have caused daytime temperatures to drop. However, a system in the Bay of Bengal has led to increased moisture levels, resulting in a spike in night time temperatures,” said the IMD.
The city continues to find itself engulfed in haze with the overall air quality hovering in the ‘moderate’ category. On Sunday, even as AQI improved marginally, it continued to remain higher than usual as the overall AQI touched 175. Of the city’s 23 stations, six locations logged ‘poor’ category air as AQI surpassed the 200-mark. The worst air quality was at Colaba (273), followed by Borivali East (271), Malad West (266), Mazgaon (258), Kandivali West (234) and Deonar (210). Data shows that no city station experienced ‘satisfactory; air which is indicative of AQI between 50 – 100. TNN
