NEW DELHI: Striker Nicolas Jackson, the captain Enzo Fernandez, and Cole Palmer showcased their goal-scoring acumen as hosts Chelsea secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
This result propelled Chelsea to joint second place in the Premier League table, level on points and goal difference with Arsenal.
The opening goal came in the seventh minute when Senegalese striker Jackson displayed his composure by side-footing a cross from Marc Cucurella into the back of the net, with the ball kissing the post on its way in.
Chelsea capitalized on Aston Villa’s defensive vulnerability in the 36th minute. Palmer’s incisive pass found Fernandez, who maintained his composure before firing a well-placed shot between Matty Cash and Ezri Konsa, extending Chelsea’s lead.
However, it was Palmer who stole the show with an exquisite strike in the 83rd minute.
The young midfielder showcased his technical ability by lofting a sublime left-footed effort into the top corner, leaving substitute goalkeeper Robin Olsen with no chance.
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea side now finds themselves level on points and goal difference with Arsenal, trailing only Liverpool, who faced Manchester City in the late kickoff.
Aston Villa, on the other hand, slipped to 11th position in the league standings.
This comprehensive victory not only underscored Chelsea’s attacking prowess but also highlighted their ability to capitalize on defensive lapses from their opponents.
With the likes of Jackson, Fernandez, and Palmer in fine form, Chelsea’s aspirations for a successful campaign have received a significant boost.
