CHENNAI: Two men attacked and sexually assaulted a college student after attacking her boyfriend while she was spending leisure moments with him inside the Anna University college campus in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police said the victim and her boyfriend are college students studying in the second year and third year at Anna University, and they stayed at the college hostel inside the premises.
On Tuesday night, the college students visited a church to attend the mass prayer held at midnight to celebrate the Christmas celebrations. After they returned to the college, the duo spent their private moments amidst the bushes when two men approached them.
Police said the two men, who according to the complainant seemed to be youngsters, attacked her boyfriend and dragged her to the bushes where they sexually assaulted her.
After the perpetrators escaped from the place, the injured college student lodged a formal complaint at the Kotturpuram police station. The injured students were admitted to a private hospital.
Meanwhile, senior police officers, Joint Commissioner of Police of East Chennai Saroj Kumar Thakur, Mylapore Deputy Commissioner of Police Hari Kiran Prasad, and others visited the college campus and conducted inquiries.
The police team has locked the entry and exit of the college campus, and a police team led by the Kotturpuram Assistant Commissioner of Police Bharathirajan is probing the case.
An investigation officer said they are reviewing the CCTV footage collected from the college premises and tracking the culprits. Police suspect the duo might be outsiders who followed the couple from the church to the college campus and then attacked them.
Kotturpuram police registered a case, and further investigations are ongoing.
Political leaders condemn sexual assault, demand swift action and justice
The city police formed three separate teams to nab the suspects. Meanwhile, the team inquired the third-year mechanical engineering student and recorded his statement. The team also recorded the girl’s statement, and she was given special counselling by the counsellors.
AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the sexual assault on a college student inside the Anna University campus. He also compared the incident to the Nirbhaya rape case reported 12 years ago. He insisted the police apprehend the miscreants involved in the incident.
BJP state president K Annamalai condemned the attack on a college student inside the Anna University campus. He demands the police arrest the miscreants immediately. He claimed that Tamil Nadu has become a breeding ground for unlawful activities and a haven and alleged that women don’t feel safe in the state.
Annamalai also demands that the chief minister of Tamil Nadu takes responsibility at least now and addresses the people on the status of this sexual assault case in Anna University and does justice to the portfolio he holds.
