Border duties or termination: Trump proposes reassigning IRS agents to southern border amid hiring freeze

US President Donald Trump in his recent address in Las Vegas said that he is considering approximately 90,000 recently hired IRS agents for border duties in the South following the implementation of hiring freeze.
The Republican also announced the possibility of firing them whose positions were funded through the $72 billion allocation from the Inflation Reduction Act while speaking at the Circa Resort & Casino.
“They hired, or tried to hire, 88,000 workers to go after you and we’re in the process of developing a plan to either terminate all of them, or maybe we’ll move them to the border,” he said.
“I think we’re going to move them to the border where they are allowed to carry guns. You know, they’re so strong on guns. But these people are allowed to carry guns. So we will probably move them to the border,” he added. The 78-year-old began his second term by issuing various executive directives, including a federal employment freeze. This freeze, however, maintains exemptions for positions involving national security, public safety, and military services.
The temporary 90-day employment suspension will affect all federal departments, excluding the IRS, suspending recruitment until Trump’s administration, including the newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), ascertains the national necessity for additional personnel.
Trump, who declared a national emergency along the US-Mexico border, intends to establish an external revenue department responsible for collecting all international revenue, including tariffs.
He has consistently warned of implementing tariffs against foreign nations that fail to align with his immigration policies, particularly targeting Mexico and Canada with proposed 25% tariffs scheduled for February 1.
Additionally, he has announced plans for a 10% to 20% levy on all international products, while Chinese imports could face tariffs up to 60%.
