NEW DELHI:The body of a Class 11 student was discovered hanging in the bathroom of her hostel at Maa Manikeswari University in Bhawanipatna town on Thursday morning, police said.
The deceased, Tofali Naik, a Commerce student from Birikote village in Kalahandi district, was staying in the Indravati Girls Hostel on the university campus.
According to police, hostel inmates alerted authorities after noticing the bathroom door locked from the inside and receiving no response. Police broke open the door and found Tofali hanging from the shower pipe with a towel.
Her body has been sent for postmortem, and a forensic team has been engaged to examine the scene. “Initial indications point to suicide, but the investigation will confirm the exact cause of death,” an officer said.
Nibedita Nath, Vice-chancellor of the university, stated that the postmortem report would provide clarity.
Tofali’s father said she had seemed slightly depressed during a conversation the previous night but gave no indication of being in severe distress.
Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the incident.
