BMC plans waste generation study to assess patterns, projections and disposal practices

Mumbai: BMC plans to conduct a study of the city’s waste generation and projection. The city generates close to 6,700 metric tonne of garbage daily. Proposals from qualified consultants and firms have been invited to conduct the study.
The study aims to assess current waste generation patterns, future projections, and composition characterisation in alignment with the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016.
The key objectives of the study will be a ward-wise waste generation assessment, where a comprehensive analysis of generation, characterisation, and disposal practices for each ward within BMC’s jurisdiction is proposed to be conducted, ensuring a detailed understanding of localised waste patterns. Another objective is understanding per capita waste generation and projections to analyse the current per capita waste generation across wards and forecast future solid waste quantities based on the Development Plan (DP 2034), factoring in anticipated growth and urban expansion.
“Besides, in the case of solid waste composition characterisation, BMC wants the selected firm to characterise the composition of solid waste generated in accordance with the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016,” said an official, adding this includes analysing variations in waste composition across different seasons and conducting assessments of key chemical properties such as calorific value and moisture content to understand waste characteristics.
The study also aims to determine the various categories of waste that require sorting and quantification based on the SWM 2016 Rules, ensuring that all types of waste are accurately measured for informed management decisions. Lastly, a macro-level waste projection is proposed to estimate the future quantum, considering population growth and urban development. The final report will incorporate a detailed analysis of waste generation fluctuations across seasons, as provided in three seasonal reports by the agency.
