BMC floats EOI for landscaping Marine Drive to Worli stretch

Mumbai: After nearly a year of planning, the BMC finally floated an Expression of Interest (EOI) on Jan 10, inviting parties to develop and maintain landscaping, gardens, and the promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road from Marine Drive to Worli.
The EOI states that this will require no financial commitment from the BMC, and the company developing it will not receive anything in return. Civic officials said any company shortlisted for this project may have to invest around Rs 1,000 crore. The BMC has not been very keen to spend any additional cost on development of these open spaces. The coastal road project itself has cost the BMC Rs 14,000 crore.
Current rules prohibit advertising on the 70-hectare stretch of open land reclaimed for the project. However, civic sources hinted at the possibility of BMC approaching the Supreme Court to seek easing of this condition. No formal decision has been made yet. — Richa Pinto
