NEW DELHI: Congress MP Randeep Surjewala shared data on Wednesday that he alleged demonstrates the “misuse” of Enforcement Directorate and the “witch-hunt” under the NDA government.
Sharing the finance ministry’s response to his parliamentary query, Surjewala highlighted the substantial rise in ED cases and their minimal conviction success.
Taking to X, Surjewala stated, “Misuse of ED & PMLA cases and the massive witch-hunt stands Exposed!”
The Congress leader outlined three significant findings from the finance ministry’s response.
The data showed that ED’s conviction success remained below five per cent over the previous five years, with 42 convictions from 911 PMLA cases, representing a 4.6 per cent success rate.
“In the last 5 years, the ED’s conviction rate has not crossed five per cent. Out of 911 cases filed under PMLA, only 42 (4.6%) have resulted in convictions,” he said in a post on X.
He further pointed out that only 257 cases (28 per cent) progressed to trial, whilst 654 cases (71.7 per cent) remained unresolved for five years.
“In the last 5 years under the NDA government, 911 cases were filed, while in the entire 10 years of the UPA government, only 102 cases were filed. This shows a wholesome misuse of ED!, ” he added in his post on X.
The Congress has repeatedly accused the government of misusing the probe agency, citing investigations against numerous opposition leaders, particularly senior party officials.
The winter Parliament session began on November 25, with both Houses adjourning early due to disruptions. The session continues until December 20.
