BJP ally TDP says population-based delimitation will hit South states

NEW DELHI: TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, during debate on the Constitution in Lok Sabha Saturday, expressed concerns about the next delimitation being done on population criteria, arguing that southern states stand to lose in the process while northern states would gain politically.
The MP said if delimitation is done on the basis of population, the calculation is that seats with four states – UP, Bihar, MP and Rajasthan – will go up from present 169 to 324, while those of Andhra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka will increase marginally from present 129 to 164 seats. “This will not be helpful in federalism,” he said, urging that benefit be given to states which have witnessed a decrease in population.
Devarayalu demanded that a time limit should be fixed for governors to give assent to bills cleared by state assemblies. The MP slammed Congress for toppling govts and said Andhra was divided despite the state assembly rejecting the proposal sent by Centre.
