Navi Mumbai: A biker died in a pile-up involving a dumper truck and at least three other vehicles –– an Audi, another car, and a bike — on Sion-Panvel highway, near Juinagar railway station, around 2.30 pm on Sunday. The driver of the dumper truck abandoned his vehicle right there and escaped soon after the crash occurred, the police said.
A criminal offence has been registered against the driver of the dumper truck identified as Umesh Dhotre, a 48-year-old resident of Turbhe, after the driver of the Audi, Abhishek Pingale (30), lodged a complaint at Nerul police station. The driver of the other car involved in the pile-up, Rajkumar Charasia, has sustained minor injury.
The police complainant states that around 2.30 pm, amid severe traffic congestion on the highway, a dumper collided with the Audi besides ramming into another car and a bike, according to senior inspector of Nerul police station, Brahmanand Naikwadi. While the police claimed that the biker, Shivaji Lendal (38), died on the spot, he was declared ‘brought dead’ at NMMC Hospital, Vashi.
