Main suspect in New Year's Day double murder case held after encounter in UP's Ballia

VARANASI: Following an encounter, the police on Friday succeeded in nabbing the main accused of the double murder that occurred on the first day of the New Year in the Narahi area of Ballia district.
An illegal .315 bore pistol with two used cartridges, one live cartridge, and a murder weapon, an axe, were recovered from his possession. The injured person was sent to the hospital for treatment.
According to reports, the Ballia SP Omvir Singh engaged police teams to arrest the suspects involved in the double murder. A team from Narhi police station was present near Baghauta bridge when they received information from an informant that the main suspect, Shivam Rai, was approaching on foot from the Ramgarh/Tootwari road.
Acting on this tip, the police team set up a blockade near Baghauta bridge and attempted to stop the approaching man. The suspect, aiming to escape, fired at the police team. In self-defence, the police returned fire, injuring the suspect in the leg.
When questioned, the injured suspect identified himself as Shivam Rai, a resident of Narayanpur in the Narahi police station area, and confessed to committing the double murder near Pragya School in Narayanpur village on January 1, along with his accomplices. He was arrested in an injured state and sent to the district hospital for treatment.
Two young men, Prashant Gupta (23) and Golu Verma (24), residents of Sikandarpur village, were brutally killed with a sharp weapon in Kotwa Narayanpur village in the Narahi police station area of Ballia district on Wednesday evening.
Angered by the incident, the family members and villagers blocked NH 31 by placing the bodies on the road, leading to a traffic jam on both sides of the Ghazipur-Bharoali route.
