At 25,808MW on Jan 11, MSEDCL sees max power demand in state in winter

Mumbai: Although the demand for electricity usually decreases in winter, MSEDCL witnessed a record power demand of 25,808 MW across Maharashtra on Jan 11. MSEDCL managed to meet this demand without any additional power purchase, as per prior planning, said MSEDCL managing director Lokesh Chandra.
“MSEDCL is responsible for the electricity supply across the entire state, except for some parts of Mumbai. On Saturday, a demand of 25,808MW was recorded, which is the highest so far. Previously, on Feb 7, 2024, a demand of 25,410MW was recorded, and on April 14, 2022, it was 25,144MW,” he said. Officials estimate the demand has increased for agricultural pumps due to good rainfall. “MSEDCL’s relevant department already made power purchase agreements. Accordingly, Saturday’s peak demand was met,” Chandra said. A total of 6,996 MW was sourced from MahaGenco, 5,252 MW from central projects and 5,733MW private projects. Besides, 2,009MW was sourced from hydroelectric projects, 3,093MW solar power projects, 228 MW wind power projects, and 2,498 MW from cogeneration projects. — Somit Sen
