AMBERNATH: A 26-year-old man stabbed a 42-year-old woman to death in broad daylight in Ambernath following a dispute over Rs 2.5 lakh he had borrowed from her and failed to return. When he began stabbing the woman, some onlookers tried to stop him, but he threatened to kill them too and fled.
Later, police arrested the unemployed accused, Rahul Pingarkar. The deceased has been identified as Seema Kamble, a caretaker who lived in Barkupada area in Ambernath after her divorce. The accused resided in the same locality. The two were friends.
Pingarkar wanted to start a business of his own, for which he had taken a loan of about Rs 2.5 lakh from Kamble. He, though, allegedly spent the money and did not return it, which led to a dispute between the two.
Police sources said Kamble had even complained about Pingarkar over the money to the local Shivaji Nagar police station. Pingarkar gave a statement at the police station detailing how he would repay the money.
Police sources said despite the written undertaking to the police, he did not return the money.
On Monday, Pingarkar called Kamble and they met on the stairs near Saibaba temple near Hutatma Chowk around 12.30pm. Following a heated argument, Kamble fished out a knife he was carrying and stabbed her multiple times.
On seeing the assault, an elderly woman begged him to stop. Pingakar threatened to kill her too. Meanwhile, a beggar woman’s son too tried to stop the accused, at which point he fled. Locals took the woman to a private hospital, where she died later.
Sachin Gore, DCP, Zone 4 of Thane commissionerate, told TOI: “Preliminary investigation has revealed the two were good friends. The accused did not return Rs 2.5 lakh he had borrowed from her, which resulted in murder. Further probe is on.”
