Arrest absconding accused: Massajog villagers; stage ‘jal samadhi’ protest

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar/Pune: Hundreds of villagers, including women and children, staged a ‘jal samadhi andolan’ at Massajog village in Beed district on Wednesday to demand the arrest of the three absconding accused in the Dec 9 abduction-murder case of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.
The protest began at 10.30am in a lake on Shindi Road, where protesters, while holding pictures of Deshmukh, immersed themselves in the water to express their anger over slow probe progress even after 24 days of the crime. Slain sarpanch’s family members joined the protest too, which ended around 1pm after Beed superintendent of police Navneet Kanwat assured them of ‘100% efforts by the police’ to nab the absconding accused.
Deshmukh’s brother, Dhananjay, raised serious concerns over the manner in which the Beed district police handled the investigation in the first 10 days of the crime. He demanded that the state govt and home department should clarify how a car, which was part of deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s convoy, was found to have been used by former Parli municipal council chief Valmik Karad to reach the state CID headquarters in Pune on Tuesday for surrendering before the agency.
Meanwhile, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar on Wednesday said Karad’s surrender before CID was a “pre-planned exercise”.
He also said it was difficult to believe that police had no clue about the movements of Karad, a close associate of cabinet minister Dhananjay Munde, for over 20 days since an extortion bid case was registered against him. “His surrender exposed intelligence agencies’ failures,” said Ambedkar.
