MUMBAI: The problem of newly laid concrete roads developing cracks persists, with yet another case emerging in Andheri’s Lokhandwala area.
A road over Mograh Nullah adjoining Grenville CHS, which was constructed just before the 2024 monsoon season, is now showing visible cracks. Locals expressed frustration, stating that they already endured major inconvenience when the road was dug up for repairs.
Now, they are facing renewed challenges as the cracks begin to surface. Residents are questioning the quality of construction and calling for accountability, with the recurring issue of poor road durability in the city.
Jyoti Bhatia, a local resident, said, “Are there any technical specifications being followed during road construction? In this area, roads built several years ago seem to hold up, yet this one, constructed just a few months ago, is already deteriorating.”
Lokhandwala-resident Dhaval Shah said that if cracks are seen on the road surface now, they fear that by the time monsoons hit, the condition of the road could worsen further.
Municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that instances such as these are being seriously looked at. “We already initiated the process of penalising contractors and quality management auditors responsible for projects where surface cracks appeared. Additionally, notices have been issued to our own engineers. Last week, I held a meeting on this matter and emphasised that strict supervision of the road construction work must be a top priority,” he said.
Last month, the BMC imposed fines totalling Rs 1.68 crore on four contractors involved in its mega concretisation project work.
A similar amount of penalty was also issued to the Quality Management Agency (QMA) involved in the works, taking the total amount of penalty on the contractor and QMA to Rs 3.37 crore. Additionally, show-cause notices have been issued to 91 engineers, including sub-engineers, executive engineers, and assistant engineers.
