Amit Shah to visit Chennai on Friday; TNCC to hold black flag demonstrations

CHENNAI: Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar and Union home minister Amit Shah are scheduled to arrive in Chennai on Friday for official and unofficial events. The leaders are expected to attend the wedding of former Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu’s grandson in the evening.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) chief K Selvaperunthagai on Thursday announced that the Congress cadres and functionaries would hold black flag demonstrations against Amit Shah for his alleged disrespect to Dr Ambedkar in parliament.
The state BJP unit has been making elaborate arrangements to welcome the Union minister. “The BJP is preparing a grand reception welcome for Amit Shah. This includes cultural performances along the route from the VIP gate at the airport to Alandur. These performances will include Bharatanatyam, parai isai, chenda melam, and folk dances,” a BJP leader said.
Amit Shah’s visit is expected to be short, with his departure scheduled for Friday night. This is due to the upcoming budget presentation in Parliament on Saturday. His earlier planned Southern Zone Council meeting with chief ministers of southern states, scheduled for Jan 31 in Mamallapuram, was put off.
BJP sources say that district units have specifically made a request to the police and Tangedco to ensure that there are no disruptions during the minister’s visit, especially power supply. The BJP wants to avoid a repeat of the earlier incident where Amit Shah’s meeting with the partymen on the GST Road was disrupted by a power cut. The senior functionaries on Thursday held discussions with the district presidents in coordinating the welcome arrangements.
Dhankar is the chief guest at the third national conference on Deafblind on Advocacy for Education, Accessibility and Wellbeing, organised by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities. The event is scheduled to take place at 5pm.
