8kg silver coins worth 7L missing, cleaner held

Mumbai: Malad police registered a criminal offence against an employee of a jewellery store for allegedly stealing 8kg of silver coins worth Rs 7.2 lakh over a period of time. The jeweller and his business partner told the police that the accused, Shravan Rajput, had been working with them as a housekeeping employee for a year.
According to the police, the jewellery outlet is located at Malad and has an office in the same building for the past 26 years. The store has 15 employees and three security guards. About 40 electronic surveillance cameras have been installed.
Recently, while reviewing footage from one of the cameras, the jeweller and his business partner found Rajput’s movements “suspicious”. The house-keeping staffer was at work cleaning the place when he opened a drawer before pocketing a silver coin kept in it. The jeweller and his business partner checked older CCTV footage. Once again, they noticed Rajput pocketing a silver coin while dusting the place.
They then checked their accounts and stocks and found 8 kg of silver coins missing. CCTV footage is wiped out every three months at the store, they told the police. They said in their statements they would check accounts and stocks to see if any other valuables were missing from the store.
