THANE: The Thane city police detained six persons, including parents and another couple, for allegedly selling a newborn girl for Rs 90,000.
According to a Central Police Station officer in Ulhasnagar, this followed a complaint by the infant’s grandmother.
“The six-day-old girl was allegedly sold on January 25 at around 4.00 pm.
Police say the transaction took place at the main gate of the Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar,” said a police officer.
Acting on a tip-off, police quickly traced and recovered the infant, who was admitted to the hospital.
The child will be produced before the Juvenile Court on Wednesday, said a police officer privy to the case.
Those arrested include the infant’s parents, two intermediaries, friends of the mother, and the buyers.
Earlier, the AHTC of Thane city police busted a child-selling racket but could not make any headway, with the senior inspector of AHTC refusing to divulge any information.
