Mumbai: Islam Gymkhana has announced a Rs 5 lakh award for Arif Bamne and three others who rescued 35 passengers from a boat that capsized after being struck by a naval speedboat near Gateway on Dec 18.
Dongri resident Faiz Khan (11), who fought off a robber to save his mother, was also felicitated by Gymkhana on Saturday.
“Arif and his group acted very fast and saved 35 precious lives. They set an example of how to react in a crisis. They are not financially well off. Besides being congratulated and felicitated with bouquets and shawls, they should be given cash prizes. Gymkhana will give them a cash prize of at least Rs 5 lakh,” said Gymkhana president Yusuf Abrahni.
Many others, like Abid Ahmed Kundalam of Global Care Foundation and businessman Mehboob Doodhwala, announced Rs 50,000 each for Bamne and his group. “They deserve more than congratulatory words. They should be helped in a way that becomes exemplary,” said activist Saeed Khan.
