41 illegal buildings case: Demolition drive commences after break

MUMBAI: Acting upon the court order, the vvcmc commenced its demolition drive on 28 November, demolishing 7 buildings of the 41, illegally constructed on a vvcmc reservation plot and a private property.
After a break, the corporation staff, along with cops in hundreds, began their demolition drive. Till now, one building had been demolished and a couple of them had to be forced out of the building premises as they resisted vacating their house.
These buildings have been constructed on vvcmc reservation for a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and Dumping Ground in Agarwal Nagari, Nalasopara east. A vvcmc Assistant Municipal Commissioner on the spot said that, the court orders will be followed and the demolition drive shall continue till the remaining illegal buildings are not demolished completely.
The residents tried to approach the supreme court again but couldn’t get any further relief and there was no assistance from the local leadership as well due to the court order.
Last week, the VVCMC had pasted a notice banner in the area, where the demolition has been planned, announcing the residents to help vvcmc peacefully conduct this demolition drive.
Part of this notice read as, “that the vvcmc had filed an interim application (15641/2024) in the high court requesting more time to demolish all the 41 buildings. On this, the high court has given them time till 31 January 2025, to complete the demolition drive and submit a report. Hence with the help of the cops, the vvcmc would be completing this activity. So we are appealing to the residents to peacefully leave their residences and shops, which will enable the vvcmc to conduct the demolition drive peacefully”.
The demolition site witnessed scores of cops with vvcmc staff and Heavy machinery, ambulances, fire fighting vehicles, police vans, official cars lined up to tackle any emergency. A couple of days ago the MBVV cops had issued prohibitory orders as well.
Meanwhile residents were seen screaming for help as they claimed that they have been staying here for the last 8 to 10 years and regularly paid taxes to the vvcmc and power bills to the MSEB.
Now as these buildings will be demolished, all their hard earned savings will be lost, without any hope of recovery.
