30-year-old suffers miscarriage after being assaulted by woman

Mumbai: Sewri police arrested a 34-year-old woman, Priyanka alias Gyanmati Bhartiya, for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend’s pregnant sister-in-law, resulting in a miscarriage. The incident occurred on Saturday at the victim’s residence in Wadala.
According to the police, the accused visited her boyfriend Manoj’s house, concealing her face and head, to confront him. When questioned by the complainant about her identity, Priyanka claimed to be Manoj’s wife. The statement shocked the complainant, as Manoj, her brother-in-law, is believed to be unmarried. The complainant tried to reason with Priyanka, but the situation escalated into a heated argument.
During the argument, the 30-year-old complainant, who was three months pregnant, asked Priyanka to leave the house. Enraged, Priyanka allegedly kicked the complainant in the stomach and fled the scene. The victim fell to the ground in severe pain and was rushed to JJ Hospital, where doctors confirmed a miscarriage later that evening. After learning that the victim had been assaulted, the doctors deemed it a medico-legal case and alerted the Sewree police.
Following the hospital’s report, the Sewree police registered a case against Priyanka under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested her.
An officer from Sewree police stated, “The accused’s actions triggered a miscarriage, which led to the death of the unborn child. She has been taken into custody, and further investigation is ongoing.”
The police are also probing Priyanka’s claim of being Manoj’s wife, which reportedly sparked the altercation.
