Mumbai: A man from Karnataka has been arrested for allegedly smuggling 3kg of gold worth Rs 2.10 crore, hidden in the light panel of the lavatory of an aircraft at Mumbai international airport.
Acting on specific intelligence, Air Intelligence Unit of Customs intercepted The passenger, Inaamul Hassan, arrived in Mumbai from Male. Officials detained Hassan, who hails from Bhatkal district of the southern state, carried out a search of his person and baggage, but found nothing. When officials examined the lavatory of the aircraft, they found 13 rectangular pouches wrapped with black adhesive tape in the light panel of the front lavatory. On opening them, they found around 3kg of 24 kt gold bars worth Rs 2.10 crore.
