21-yr-old pillion rider killed as scooter tries to overtake BEST bus & skids in Powai | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A 21-year-old pillion rider died and his father, an IT engineer, sustained injuries when a BEST bus ran over them after their scooter skid on Mahatma Phule Road in Powai on Sunday morning.
Powai police detained the BEST bus driver, identified only as Sachin (42), for rash and negligent driving. He later got bail.
Police said the incident took place around 7.30am, when Vikhroli Parksite resident Sandeep Bobade (48) and his son Raj (21) rode to Powai on their scooter to buy fish. “The accident occurred when Sandeep was trying to overtake the bus in the narrow road. The scooter skid as the road was wet due to drainage overflow,” said a police officer.
On noticing the skidding scooter, Sachin tried to halt the bus, but ran over the duo. While Sandeep survived with fractures on his legs, toes, and right hand, Raj, who was not wearing a helmet, died due to greivous head injuries. In his police complaint, Sandeep said: “People who witnessed the incident rushed me to Hiranandani Hospital, while my son was declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital due to multiple head injuries.”
