2 mths after he wed, man flees with wife’s 18.5L gold and cash

Mumbai: A 51-year-old newly married man was arrested by Dindoshi police on Thursday, weeks after he vanished with his wife’s gold jewellery and cash. PC Nayak, the accused, had tied the knot last Nov after meeting his wife on a matrimonial portal. After his arrest, he told the police that he had suffered heavy losses in the stock market which drove him to commit the crime.
The complainant is 50-years-old and has a daughter from her previous marriage. After her husband’s death, her family encouraged her to remarry. She liked Nayak’s profile on a matrimonial site and started to chat with him. He told her that he had lost his wife and child to Covid. In Nov 2024, they had a court marriage, and then rented a flat at Malad (E).
The complainant told the police that Nayak helped organise her daughter’s wedding ceremony in Dec 2024 and won her confidence. The daughter and son-in-law lived in Vile Parle. In Jan, the complainant moved her jewellery from her Malad home, and kept Rs 1.5 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 17 lakhin her cupboard on Jan 24. The next morning, Nayak was nowhere to be found. The valuables had also vanished. Both his phones were switched off.
The complainant contacted her daughter and son-in-law. They went over to the company where Nayak was employed, but learnt that Nayak hadn’t been to work for a few days. A police complaint of cheating was lodged.
A team from Dindoshi police station, under supervision of DCP Smita Patil, ACP Datta Dhole and senior inspector Ajay Aphale, used technical surveillance methods to track down Nayak. He was found to be living at Baner, Pune, from where he was arrested on Thursday.
The gold has been recovered, but only Rs 35000 cash was found, said the police.
