THANE: As many as 17 families staying in a ground plus three storeyed building in the densely populated Padwal Nagar area of Wagle estate ward had to be evacuated after a portion of ceiling plaster of three flats and the third floor staircase collapsed early hours of Tuesday.

The incident was reported around 2.30 am to the regional disaster management cell, Thane following which a team of rescue officials including a NDRF team rushed to the spot and immediately evacuated the Nandadeep building as a precautionary measure.“Around 17 families staying in the building were relocated to the Hajuri rental housing building. The affected building is around 60 years old. Residents of two adjoining structures were also asked to evacuate as the structures in the area are constructed close to each other,” informed Yasin Tadvi, in-charge at the Thane regional disaster management cell.The structural condition of the building was not yet known and officials, Tuesday morning said, they would analyse its condition and decide the next course of action.It may be recalled deputy CM Eknath Shinde had a day earlier instructed Thane civic officials to stay alert and ensure there are no casualties during monsoon. Thane collector Ashok Shingare had said around 700 across corporations and councils in the district had been identified and process to evacuate them had begun.
