Ponda: Rajesh Mapari, 38, a resident of Golnawado, Pomburpa in Bardez taluka, has been remanded in 13-day judicial custody.
He was arrested by Mardol police for snatching the mangalsutra of a woman at Marcel.
After the end of his police custody, Mardol police produced him before a Ponda judicial magistrate first class on Saturday, where the court sent him to judicial custody.
Following a complaint from Shrimati Shripad Parab, 70, a resident of Kurduwada, Tonca, Mardol police had nabbed the alleged chain snatcher and recoveredthe Mangalsutra worth Rs 1.4 lakh.
After the theft, the accused had mortgaged the ornament weighing 28 g with a goldsmith in Bicholim against Rs 50,000. The police have recovered the Mangalsutra from the goldsmith.
An offence has been registered at the Mardol police station under Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, 2023.
Further investigation is under way.
