11 city juvies to be tried as adults for heinous crimes

NEW DELHI: On July 27, a minor shot at a woman due to a personal feud, targeting her when she was returning home from the market. A week before, in Bawana, three boys robbed a man of his mobile phone and some cash, pressing a sharp object against his neck.

In the courts

The accused in these cases are among 11 juveniles involved in heinous crimes who will be tried as adults. The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) has granted permission to police to do so, as part of a special drive to bring criminals to book, irrespective of age.

Juvenile crimes: Max applications from Narela

A total of 52 juveniles, aged between 16 and 18, were identified for involvement in heinous crimes, including robbery, snatching, murder, and attempt to murder, among other offences. Narela police station sent 20 applications, the most among all police stations. JJB approved six of these for trial as adults. Bhalaswa Dairy police station submitted 12 applications, two of which were approved.
DCP (Outer North) Nidhin Valsan said applications were submitted to court, requesting that these juveniles be tried as adults, given the severity of their alleged crimes. “This decision marks a significant step toward ensuring that individuals who engage in such grievous criminal activities are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, irrespective of their age,” Valsan said.
