Mumbai: Malabar Hill police arrested three, including a woman, from Uttar Pradesh in connection with a sextortion racket.
The woman had befriended a 59-year-old Malabar Hill-based hotelier and then asked him to video-call her. During the call, she clicked his photos and recorded his videos in compromising positions. Along with two of her accomplices, she allegedly began to blackmail him and extorted Rs 3 lakh online.
The three arrested accused have been identified as Shreya Badoria (26), Dipesh Daas (24) and Pratiksha Pande (26). Police have frozen the bank account in which the money was transferred. Police suspect that the gang might have similarly targeted a few more elderly men.
The latest victim initially paid the woman around Rs 2.7 lakh. When she began to threaten him and demand more money, he approached the police and lodged a complaint. Police said the victim had accepted a friend request on Instagram from an unknown profile on Jan 1. The woman and the victim then exchanged phone numbers and started communicating.
Police advisory: Avoid engaging in personal or explicit conversations with strangers online, never share private information, images or videos with unknown individuals, and report any suspicious activity to cybercrime authorities immediately.
