As 2024 comes to a close, a year filled with exciting motorcycle launches in the Indian market, we take a moment to reflect on some of the standout sub-500cc motorcycles we tested over the past year. Spanning various segments, price ranges, and catering to diverse consumer needs, these bikes were launched between December 2023 and November 2024. Here’s a quick roundup of each model and what impressed us the most.
Hero Xtreme 125R – Rs 95,800, ex-showroom
Hero MotoCorp debuted the Xtreme 125R in the 125cc segment with its sharp, aggressive design inspired by larger-capacity sports bikes. In fact, on a first glance, it makes it hard to believe that it’s a commuter. The model comes packed with first-in-segment features, it boasts all-LED lighting, a fully digital instrument cluster, and single-channel ABS.

As for the engine, the 124.7cc air-cooled motor delivers 11.4bhp and 10.5Nm of torque, paired with a smooth-shifting 5-speed gearbox. During our road tests, the motor impressed with its refinement and consistent performance, even at speeds above 85 kmph. The model offers comfortable ergonomics, light clutch, and slick transmission and a sporty design that appeals to the youth. No surprise, it’s a frequent sight on roads these days and has been consistently ranking among India’s top 10 selling motorcycles.
Pulsar NS400Z – Rs 1.85 lakh, ex-showroom
Earlier this year, Bajaj stirred the already exciting mid-capacity segment with the launch of its flagship Pulsar NS400Z. The model has been priced competitively at Rs 1.85 lakh, ex-showroom. Now, in terms of appearance, the NS400Z carries the aggressive design ethos of the Pulsar NS family but manages to carve out its own identity with large tank extensions, projector headlamps flanked by thunderbolt-shaped LED DRLs, and sporty graphics. In short, it manages to look like a refined streetfighter. Features include all-LED lighting, a Bluetooth-enabled LCD console, and practical touches like turn-by-turn navigation.

Powering the NS400Z is a 373cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, delivering 40 hp and 35 Nm of torque, mated to a slick six-speed gearbox. Its performance shines in the mid-range, making highway cruising and overtaking effortless. However, slight vibrations beyond 7,000 rpm may temper the experience for some. The bike’s perimeter frame, complemented by gold USD forks and a monoshock, ensures excellent handling and stability. With features like dual-channel ABS, traction control, and four riding modes (Rain, Road, Sport, Off-Road), the NS400Z makes for a good deal given the performance, features and appeal given the price point.
Triumph Speed T4 – Rs 1.99 lakh, ex-showroom
Following the success of the Speed 400, Triumph launched the Speed T4 in September. Essentially, it is a more affordable yet characterful version of the Speed 400, priced at Rs 2.17 lakh, ex-showroom. While it retains the classic Speed 400 design, the T4 simplifies things by offering conventional mirrors, telescopic forks, and blacked-out elements for a modern touch.

Its suspension is tuned for city comfort, tackling potholes effortlessly, and the 398cc engine delivers smooth power. Notably, it offers superior low-end torque (85 percent available from 2,500 rpm) for easy city riding without having to shift gears frequently. Though stripped of features like traction control and ride-by-wire, equipment like LED lighting and a USB port remain. The model is perfect for relaxed commutes and in our opinion is more than just a budget version of the Speed 400. In fact, during our quick city runs, it was more enjoyable than the Speed 400 itself despite lower power figures of 30.6 bhp and 36 Nm.
Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 – Rs 2.39 lakh, ex-showroom
The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, starting at Rs 2.39 lakh ex-showroom, brings a fresh, minimalist roadster to the market, and it looks unlike any other Royal Enfield on sale. Hence, it’s a model that makes fellow motorists curious. In terms of looks, some find it polarizing while to some, like us, it’s a decent-looking blend of a roadster and an ADV.
The model is powered by the same 452cc engine from the Himalayan 450 and produces 40 hp and 40Nm, offering strong performance, especially once you cross 4,000 rpm. The engine feels smooth on highways, easily handling triple-digit speeds, with fewer vibrations than expected. However, below 3,000 rpm, there’s limited torque, and at lower revs, the engine starts to judder. Its 780mm seat height and lightweight build make it approachable for new riders. Although the long wheelbase and wide tyres make the bike very stable even at higher speeds, they do also make city riding challenging, especially in slow traffic or tight U-turns.

Nevertheless, in terms of overall riding, the Guerrilla 450’s performance shines through. It offers smooth acceleration and strong stability at higher speeds. It features Showa suspension and responsive brakes. For Rs 2.39 lakh, it offers a solid mix of performance and approachable ergonomics, making it a great choice for both city commutes and weekend rides.
Aprilia RS 457 – Rs 4.10 lakh, ex-showroom
The Aprilia RS 457 has entered India’s entry-level supersport segment with Italian style and solid performance at Rs 4.10 lakh, ex-showroom. Manufactured locally in Baramati, Maharashtra, the model draws design from its bigger sibling, the RS 660. The RS 457 is truly a head-turner on the road and features triple LED headlights, a sharp fairing, and a sculpted fuel tank. The model offers a mix of aggressive and comfortable ergonomics, supported by 41mm USD forks, a preload-adjustable monoshock, and dual-channel ABS. The 5-inch TFT cluster, ride modes, and connectivity add a modern touch, though we would’ve liked a quick shifter at this price.

Powered by a 457cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, the RS 457 delivers 48 hp and 43.5 Nm, with smooth power delivery and strong acceleration beyond 5,500 rpm. Despite its 175 kg kerb weight, it offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, handling both city traffic and highways with ease. In short, it is a very enjoyable machine and offers unparalleled fun, especially at its competitive price.
