Mumbai: BMC is likely to open the second part of Andheri’s Gokhale bridge by May this year. On Friday, local MLA Ameet Satam, who inspected the work site along with civic officials, said that the work on the bridge is underway on a war footing.
According to Ameet Satam, on the east side of the bridge, all four foundations and piers are complete, along with three out of four pier caps and one of four girders. The remaining work includes the installation of the final pier cap, three girders, and ramp construction. On the west side, all five foundations and piers are complete, along with four out of five pier caps. Two girders have been installed, while three are still pending.
The earlier deadline set for opening the bridge was April 2025.
Gokhale bridge was shut in November 2022, after an inspection revealed that various elements, including RCC columns, tie beams, girders, deck slab, and bearings, were heavily distressed and weakened due to corrosion.
The first arm of Gokhale bridge was opened on February 26, 2024, but owing to the approximately 6ft gap with the connecting C D Barfiwala flyover, the latter became out of bounds for motorists. On April 14, 2024, BMC’s bridges department, under the supervision of experts from IIT-B and VJTI, began work on fixing the approximately 6ft gap between the two bridges. On July 4, 2024, the BMC completed the partial alignment works and opened it up to traffic.
